FIGURES REVEAL STIFF RISE IN ANTI-IMPOTENCE DRUG USE

12.00.00am GMT Fri 8th Feb 2008

New figures obtained by the Liberal Democrats ahead of Valentine's Day show that there has been a 60% increase in the use of anti-impotence drugs in England since 2002.

The official statistics from a parliamentary answer show the rise in the use of drugs such as Viagra, Cialis and Levitra means the equivalent of one in every 12 men in England has been prescribed drugs for erectile dysfunction.

The cost of the drugs to the NHS in 2006, the year with the most recently available data, was £58 million.

Commenting, Liberal Democrat Health Spokesperson, Sandra Gidley MP said:

"Whilst no one would begrudge men the benefits of anti-impotence treatment, these figures underline a worrying trend.

"These drugs shouldn't be seen as a 'cure' in themselves. Impotence is often the symptom of a different problem, in many cases diabetes. Anyone experiencing impotence should discuss all possible causes with their GP and try to tackle the root of the problem.

"By making simple changes to their lifestyle many diabetic men can tackle the underlying problem of impotence, keep active for longer and enjoy Valentine's Day with a smile on their face."
