LET THERE BE LIGHT! - GIDLEY

12.00.00am GMT Wed 13th Feb 2008

Following the news that 1000 streetlights across Hampshire are being turned off at night to cut energy bills and meet climate change targets local MP, Sandra Gidley commented:

"I am astonished to hear that the County Council is prepared to put local people at risk of crime and accidents simply to save themselves some money. They should be spending less on spin doctors and not cutting corners on public safety.

"The safety of the streets and local people must be at the heart of everything a council does. It is simply not acceptable to use an issue such climate change as a smokescreen for ill thought through cuts.

"I urge the council to reverse its position immediately and to properly consult the public and the police before deciding such a measure is desirable or necessary."
