MP PRAISES ROMSEY'S RETAINED FIREFIGHTERS

12.00.00am GMT Wed 13th Feb 2008

Local MP, Sandra Gidley has praised the work of Romsey's retained firefighters following a visit to the town's firestation.

Sandra was given the opportunity to speak to the town's firefighters, before being shown a demonstration of their role in a road traffic accident - the most common form of incident here in Hampshire.

Commenting this morning, Sandra said:

"We are so lucky to have such a dedicated team of retained firefighters here in Romsey. I take my hat off to these incredibly brave people who give up much of their free time to ensure that we are safe.

"As someone who witnessed a road traffic accident last week, I was amazed how calmly and quickly our local firefighters were able to demonstrate how to clear a dangerous and life-threatening situation so that patients can be treated.

On her visit, Sandra was told about the difficulties some retained personnel experience with their employers.

"Being on call causes difficulties for many retained firefighters across the country. We are lucky here in Romsey that some local employers are accommodating and helpful, but sadly this is not universally the case and we need to consider ways that employers do not feel they are losing out" added Sandra.

"I would urge local people who want to serve their community to consider putting themselves forward. Retained firefighters play a vital role in saving the lives of friends and neighbours and our thanks should go out to them all."
